This release of Tarantella Enterprise 3 (version 3.4) contains the following new features and changes:
Tarantella can run desktops and applications on a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. See Configuring Microsoft Windows Terminal Services for use with Tarantella for details of the additional configuration needed.
Windows application objects can now be configured for 8, 16 or 24-bit color depth. By default, a Windows 2003 Server displays applications using 16-bit color and this is the default depth for all new Windows application objects. If the color depth setting of a Windows application object is different from that of the application server, Tarantella automatically adjusts the color depth to match the server setting.
Tarantella version 3.4 clients also support time zone redirection. This allows client computers to redirect their time zone settings to the terminal server so that users see the correct time for their time zone in their desktop/application sessions. The Windows 2003 Server has to be configured for time zone redirection.
Tarantella now includes a pre-configured web server (with SSL). For more information, see Introducing the Tarantella Web Server. The Tarantella Web Server has been included so that Tarantella Administrators no longer need to obtain, install and configure their own web server for use with Tarantella.
You can still use your own web server with Tarantella, if you prefer. We recommend you use the Tarantella Web Server.
This release includes the following enhancements to Tarantella printing:
--gsbindir
option for the Tarantella
prtinstall.en.sh
script which allows you to specify the location of Ghostscript on the Tarantella host.
There are some new Expect scripts which allows many "pupils" to shadow a "teacher" in a "virtual classroom".
There is a new Tarantella Native Client for Mac OS X. The client requires Mac OS X 10.2 and X11 for Mac OS X. Users can get the client from the Native Client download page.
You can now configure multiple external DNS names for a Tarantella server in Array Manager (General properties).
The change allows you to use different external DNS names depending on the IP address of the client.
All Tarantella clients now include support for SOCKS v5 proxy servers and this is licensed with the Tarantella Base Component. Tarantella supports the Basic and No authentication schemes.
For details, see Using Tarantella with proxy servers.
The Sessions tab in Object Manager now lists the webtop sessions as well as the emulator sessions associated with the following object types:
.../_ens/o=Tarantella System Objects/cn=Web User Profile
); andThe tab shows information about the webtop session such as the Tarantella server the user is logged in to, the type of connection the user has and the printing status of the client.
The tab also allows you to select one or more webtop sessions and log users out of Tarantella.
The Scale to fit window attribute (introduced in version 3.30) causes an application to be scaled to fit the window in which it is displayed. This attribute can now be selected for graphical applications set to display in a kiosk window (--displayusing kiosk).
Character and 3270 character applications can now be displayed in kiosk mode.
The Tarantella Java™ archive type used by default for Internet Explorer users on Windows is installed locally. However, the ability to install archives locally requires Administrator privileges. In previous releases, if the user did not have these privileges, they got "stuck" at the Tarantella splash screen. Now if Tarantella detects that the user does not have Administrator privileges, Tarantella will automatically use the cabinet archive type instead which is cached rather than installed.
Also, in this release the Tarantella Java™ archives have been renamed so that the archives used for version 3.4 are different to previous versions. This means the Java archives will be installed rather than upgraded when users connect to a version 3.4 Tarantella server and co-exist with archives from previous versions of Tarantella.
There are some changes to the way keyboard maps are handled for graphical applications.
Tarantella can now assign a keyboard map based on the input locale of the client device. This can be set globally on the X Protocol Engine properties in Array Manager or set for individual users using the Keyboard Map attribute
Also, if a keyboard map is assigned to a user on the basis of input locale of the client
device or the locale of the Tarantella server, Tarantella uses the
install_dir/etc/data/keymaps/xlocales.txt
file determine the
actual keymap to use. You can now use the * and ? wildcards in the xlocales.txt
file to support a wider range of locales. See the xlocales.txt
file for details.
You no longer need a Directory Services Integration license to be able to authenticate users against an LDAP directory server. This license is only required if you want to use the LDAP webtop searches.
Web application objects are no longer available in Object Manager. The commands for creating web application objects and populating the web cache have also been removed.
You can still give users access to web applications by using document objects. You can also use web server authentication to authenticate web application users to Tarantella (or Tarantella users to the web application).
