Notes:

Which JVM should I use?

The release of Netscape and Internet Explorer version 6.0 browsers introduced an important change to the way the virtual machine for the Java™ platform ('Java Virtual Machine' or 'JVM') is handled. The change means that a JVM is no longer automatically installed when a browser is installed. Users can now choose which JVM they use.

If you are using a version 6.0+ browser, we recommend the following JVMs:

BrowserRecommended virtual machine
Internet Explorer 6.0If available, Microsoft Virtual Machine for Internet Explorer.
Otherwise, Sun Java Plug-In version 1.4.2
Netscape 6.0+Sun Java Plug-In version 1.4.2

Note For Internet Explorer, we support both the Microsoft VM and the Sun Java Plug-In. We support the Microsoft VM on all platforms. We only support version 1.4.2 of the Java Plug-In on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
