Licensing Tarantella

When you have finished evaluating Tarantella, you must buy commercial license packs. License packs contain the license keys you must install in order to unlock the software features.

Before you buy license packs you need to decide:

To license Tarantella, first you must buy an Activation Pack and install its license key. You can then increase the number of licensed users and/or add connections to other types of applications by buying User Expansion Packs. If you are using Tarantella Enterprise 3, you can increase the functionality available to your Tarantella array by buying Advanced Feature Packs. You can also buy Maintenance and Right to upgrade licenses. These packs and the features they license are described below. At the end of this topic is a table comparing the standard features of Tarantella Enterprise 3 and Tarantella Enterprise 3 EX.

For more details on the license packs, visit the Tarantella web site.

Activation Pack

An Activation Pack is required to enable an array of one or more Tarantella servers.

You cannot add Activation Packs together. Activation Packs are licensed on a per-array basis and every array must have one.

Activation Packs also include an initial quantity of user licenses to connect to Windows and/or UNIX applications, with or without secure connections.

User Expansion Packs

User Expansion Packs allow you to increase the number of licensed users and/or add connectivity to other types of applications. They can also allow secure connections.

You must have an Activation Pack before you can install a User Expansion Pack.

User Expansion Packs contain licenses which are available on a per-user basis.

The table below shows what license types are available in User Expansion Packs and what features each type licenses. The license types may be available individually or in pre-configured combinations.

License typeWhat the license type provides
Windows ConnectivityThe ability to run Windows applications.
UNIX ConnectivityThe ability to run UNIX and Linux applications.
SecurityThe ability to use secure connections, support for HTTP and Secure (SSL) proxy servers, firewall traversal and the ability to authenticate users using RSA SecurID®.
AS/400 ConnectivityThe ability to run 5250 applications.
Mainframe ConnectivityThe ability to run 3270 applications.

Note The UNIX Connectivity and Windows Connectivity licenses include licenses for the Tarantella Base Component. This provides core functionality such as the ability to log in, to authenticate users against an LDAP directory server, support for SOCKS v5 proxy servers, webtops, arrays, session management and application launch.

The AS/400 Connectivity and Mainframe Connectivity licenses do not include the Base Component and therefore require an equal or greater number of Windows Connectivity and/or UNIX Connectivity licenses.

You can't mix named and concurrent user licenses in the same array. If your Activation Pack uses named user licensing, your User Expansion Packs and Advanced Feature Packs must also use named user licensing. For details on the differences between named and concurrent user licensing, see How Tarantella enforces licensing.

Advanced Feature Packs

Advanced Feature Packs contain licenses which are available on a per-array basis (regardless of the number of users). They allow you to add increased functionality to an array or to increase its size.

These packs are only available to Tarantella Enterprise 3 users as they are included as standard in Tarantella Enterprise 3 EX.

The following Advanced Feature Packs are available:

License typeWhat the license type provides
Extended ArrayThe ability to increase the number of Tarantella Enterprise 3 servers in an array to three or more.
Directory Services IntegrationThe ability to give users access to applications based on information held in an LDAP (version 3 or later) directory server.
Portal IntegrationThe ability to use Tarantella with a Sun ONE Portal Server (version 6 or later).
Advanced Load ManagementThe ability to load balance application servers based on their true CPU or memory load.

Maintenance and Right to upgrade licenses

When you buy a support product from Tarantella, you will be given a Maintenance license key, which you should install.

A Maintenance license key gives you maintenance for one or more Tarantella components and/or a number of users. For example, if you buy a User Expansion Pack that licenses 20 users for the Base Component and Windows Connectivity Pack, you need to buy a 20-user Base Component/Windows Connectivity Pack Maintenance license key.

An array as a whole is only considered as maintained if every product license is covered by Maintenance license keys.

If you want to upgrade your version of Tarantella you can only do this if:
